Logan Lake, Shasta County, 8/5/06
My son, Steven, and I checked things out at Logan Lake this afternoon. Lots of spreadwings (Lyre-tipped, Northern, Emerald, and Spotted) and meadowhawks (Striped, Whitefaced, and a Cherry-faced/Saffron-winged). Quite a few darners, too, including Common Green, Blue-eyed, and Aeshna sp. Also saw a few Boreal Bluet and Pacific Forktail. All that said, I've got no dragonfly photos to show you, just a frog and a couple of grasshoppers.

Pacific Chorus Frog. We saw several of these, mostly light tan in color. |
A kind of spur-throated grasshopper. The spur-like projection is clearly visible in the original picture when zoomed in. You can kind of see it here, in front of where the fore-leg attaches to the body. |
Steven found this handsome grasshopper by the car. It is also a variety of spur-throated. The spur is barely visible as a blunt, red projection immediately behind the front leg. |
A look at the above grasshopper from the other side. |
Another spur-throated grasshopper. They were present in great numbers. |
The same species as above. Picture rotated 75 degrees clockwise. |
