Gumboot Lake - Part 2, Siskiyou County, 8/14/06

We saw plenty of emeralds (American and some Ringed), four species of darner, and some skimmers.

He decided to fly as I clicked the shutter.

This is a picture of the same individual taken earlier. He kept circling us and landing on vegetation.

Ringed Emerald male - Little Gumboot Lake. Kathy netted this individual -- the picture was POSED.

Same as above.

A third look.

Twelve-spotted Skimmer female, just emerged (exuviae is visible in left background) - Gumboot Lake. Dave found this dragonfly about four feet from water -- for close-up views click here.

Striped Meadowhawk male - Gumboot Lake. This is an example of the pale variety with brown, not black legs.

Same individual, different pose. I thought the rock he was on had an interesting pattern and color.

Variable Darner male resting in the shadow of a bush - Gumboot Lake. Darners would never land when over the lake or along the shoreline, but they frequently would rest inland. Walking about in the forest, I would often flush them. Unfortunately, the darners would fly far, far away. This darner happened to land near where I was standing. I started to take its picture, but the batteries for the flash were dead. I noted the location, went back to the car and refreshed the batteries. He was still there when I got back.

Same darner, different picture. I held the camera portrait style for a closer shot and turned it on its side to show more detail.
