Gumboot Lake - Part 1, Siskiyou County, 8/14/06
I met Dave and Kathy Biggs by Lake Siskiyou near Mount Shasta. We caravaned some 13 miles to Gumboot Lake, Little Gumboot Lake, and a small pond nearby.

Male Northern Spreadwing - Gumboot Lake. The only spreadwings we saw on the trip were Northern. |
|
Kathy found these Northern Spreadwings ovipositing under water at Gumboot Lake. Every few minutes, the spreadwings would come up for air. Spreadwings submerging themselves to oviposit was something we'd never heard about, so we (especially Kathy) went looking for more. I think the final count was on the order of ten pairs behaving in this way. |

Same pair as above. Focusing the lens on underwater odes is nearly impossible. |
|
This is a pair that I found. |
