| Mew Gulls are occasionally encountered in the Redding area of Shasta County, California. Several are reported each year and are typically seen in town along the Sacramento River. [Sibley, p. 212 & 213; National Geographic, 4th Ed., p. 198, 199 & 212] |

![]() This immature (first cycle) Mew Gull was observed for a while at Kutras Lake, Redding, during the winter of 2003/2004. Note large dark eye that is 1/2 to 3/4 of bill thickness; thin bi-colored bill, dark at the tip; relatively long wings; solid gray feathers on mantle and scapulars. 12/22/03. |
![]() Same bird as pictured above. Observe the pale area covering the outer secondary and inner primary flight feathers. The three outer primaries (P8 - 10) are entirely dark. The secondaries form a dark brown bar at the training edge of the wing. 12/22/03. |
