Equipment and Technique

I've been photographing odonata since June 2001. The first camera I used for this purpose was a "consumer grade" digital camera, which had 3.2 MP of resolution (Nikon Coolpix 995). In August 2003, I upgraded to a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera, the 6.3 MP Canon 10D, and in April 2006, I upgraded again, to a 12.8 MP Canon 5D. Listed below is the equipment I currently use. As for technique, I typically take flash pictures with the camera and flash in manual mode. It is my intent to periodically update this page with changes in equipment and more in-depth discussions of technique.

camera: Canon EOS 5D - 12.8 megapixel, full-frame sensor
primary lens: Canon 180 mm f/3.5 macro
secondary lens: Canon 1.4x teleconverter
flash: Canon 550EX w/white acrylic sheet as a diffuser
other: flash arm, flash chord, battery pack for flash, etc.
