Carnaz Lake, Shasta County, 8/27/06

Carnaz Lake (elevation 4455 feet) is six miles up a dirt road (toward Burney Mountain) from the community of Hat Creek. It is very similar to Logan Lake, which I've written about before (this was my first visit to Carnaz Lake). Carnaz Lake has no outlet. It fills with water in winter and spring, then slowly dries out during the summer but not completely.

Nothern Spreadwing male. I netted eight to ten spreadwings and photographed a few more. All were Northern or Spotted Spreadwing.

Familiar Bluet male. Saw a few bluets. I assume they were Familiar, like this one, or Tule, like the young one two pictures down.

Tule Bluet young male. This individual was on the small side (I'm guessing 28-30 mm). Picture is rotated clockwise.

dragonfly

Saffron-winged Meadowhawk female. I saw about a dozen Saffron-winged, some of which seemed to be males, but I wasn't able to get a male posed. Other meadowhawks seen were Striped (common), White-faced (several), and Western (several).
